4 Biological molecules Flashcards
Protein
An organic compound that is made of one or more chains of amino acids
emulsifying Fats (Lipids)
add ethanol and water and shake
white emulsion occurs
Complex carbohydrates
Starch, Cellulose and Glycogen are examples of these
Simple carbohydrates
made of monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose and disaccharides such as lactose and sucrose
Benedicts test
a simple biochemical reaction to detect the presence of reducing sugars.
From blue to
Green- little
Yellow- some
Red- alot
Biuret solution
indicator that turns purple in the presence of protein
Iodine
food test
Turns blue black in the presence of starch
Amino acids
Building blocks of proteins
Glycogen
A storage carbohydrate found in muscles. Made up of lots of glucose molecules joined together
Starch
storage form of glucose in plants
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
Elements found in lipids and carbohydrates
C, H, O, N (sometimes sulfur)
Elements found in proteins
DCPIP
Turns from blue to colorless when there is a certain amount of vitamin C
Cellulose
A structural polysaccharide that is a component of cell walls in plants.
C, H, O
elements found in carbs
C, H, O, N, P
elements found in DNA or RNA
Nucleic acid
what is it made of
made of nucleotides
Cellulose made of
d-glucose units
Starch and glycogen
What is it made up of
Starch is comprised of both amylose (linear) and amylopectin (branched) molecules. Glycogen is only comprised of glycogen molecules which are more branched than amylopectin.
