15 Drugs Flashcards
MRSA
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Antibiotics
A medical drug that kills bacteria by interfering with some of their important metabolic reactions.
Pathogen
A disease-causing agent such as a virus or a bacterium.
Bacteria
Small, single-celled organism with no nucleus (plural: bacterium).
Viruses
Microscopic particle consisting of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat.
Different antibiotics affect different bacteria in different ways. They may:
Cause the bacterial cell membrane to break, killing the bacterial cell
Prevent bacteria from making new cell walls, so the bacteria cannot reproduce or grow.
Drugs
A drug is any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body.
Antibiotic resistance
In any given population of bacteria, there may be some individuals that are resistant to an antibiotic.
Their genetic material allows them to produce substances that counteract the effects of the antibiotic.
In the presence of the antibiotic, individuals who cannot resist the antibiotic die or stop reproducing.
However, the resistant bacteria continue to grow and reproduce, eventually becoming a new population
How we contribute to antibiotic resistance
Taking it when it is unnecessary
Used in farming such as livestock
Travel increase spread
Not completing the cycle
County without prescriptions
