4 ascending and descending tracts Flashcards
What separates the somatic sensory brain and motor sensory brain/
the central sulcus
What sorts of sensory information do the dorsal columns carry?
low-threshold signals
proprioception and tactility
What sorts of sensory information do the ventral spinocerebrellar tracts carry?
pain and temperature
Where is concious sensation processed?
How does it get there?
sensory cortex
dorsal columns and spinothalamic tract
Where is non-concious sensation processed?
cerebellum
What facilitates division of the primary sensory neurone to synapse in its’ respective, superior, and inferior dorsal horns?
posterolateral tract of Lissauer
What is significant about the lamina in which the primary sensory neurone terminates?
determined by the modality it represents
Which laminae do pain fibres terminate in?
Laminae I and II of the dorsal horn
What are Laminae III and IV otherwise called?
Nucleus Proprius
What are decussation fibres otherwise known as?
anterior commissures
spinal arcuate fibres
What happens to nerve fibres once they decussate?
they travel in the white matter of the contralateral side
What happens in the 3rd stage of spinal sensation?
axons of 3rd order sensory neurons of the VPL ascend further to terminate in the post-central gyrus via the internal capsule
At which level do fibres of the ventral spinocerebrelllar tract decussate?
same neural level as its’ respective dermatome
At which level do fibres of the dorsal column decussate?
medulla
What is syringomyelia?
a cyst of hte spinal canal caused by spinal irritation
