3R's and the Impact on the Environment Flashcards
What are the 3 R’s?
Reduce, reuse, recycle
When I ride my bike twice…does that count as re-cycling?? haha get it
What is recycling?
The collecting and processing of materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Basically taking trash and making it into something better.
What does recycling benefit?
Recycling benefits the environment and the community (yh not like we learnt this since 1st yr)
What is the best way to manage waste?
To not produce it (pfft hahahaha obviously)
How can you lessen the waste you produce?
Shopping carefully, buy products in bulk
avoid over-packaged goods, especially ones packed with several materials such as foil, paper, plastic.
Avoid disposable goods (paper plates, cups, napkins etc.) Throwaways contribute to the problem, and cost more because they must be replaced again and again
Buy durable goods, ones that are well- built or that carry good warranties.
Why should you buy products in bulk?
Larger economy-sized products or ones in concentrate form use less packaging and usually cost less per ounce.
Why should you NOT buy over-packaged goods?
They are difficult to recycle plus you may pay more for the package
Why should I buy durable goods?
They will last longer, save money in the long run and save land-fill space.
What are some extra things you can do to save space?
Make two-sided copies when printing.
Maintain central files rather than using several files for individuals.
Use electronic mail or main bulletin board.
Why should I reuse?
It makes economic and environmental sense to reuse products.
Reusing stuff takes creativity? True or false
True
How can we reduce products?
Save things like plastic, paper and plastic bags also to repair broken appliances, furniture and toys.🍽
Use products for different purposes like using a coffee pan to pack lunch (IDK how that works)
Sell stuff or donate them to charities.👚
Use resealable containers than plastic wrap.🍶
Use reusable cups like a ceramic coffee cup ☕
Don’t take bags from the store unless you need one, you can use your own cloth bags (but then how will I get actual bags and stuff when I need to give the neighbour mangoes or something like-)
What is the meaning of recycling?
Recycling is a series of steps that takes a used material and processes, remanufactures, and sells it as a new product. (basically again taking trash and making it better but now we’re selling it and stuff)
How do u know if something is made of recycled materials or can be recycled?
Look for the recycling symbol or ask store managers or salesmen.
For instance, many plastic containers have a recycling symbol with a numbered code that identifies what type of plastic resin it is made from but, just because the container has this code does not mean it
can be easily recycled locally.
List some benefits of recycling-
It reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.
It conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.
Increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials. (idek what that means)
Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials.
It saves energy
It supports manufacturing and conserves valuable resources.
It helps create jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries.
