**s/s asthma
- *- dry cough & wheezing
- breathing through the mouth
- chest pressure
- increased HR
- throat irritation
Step 1
SABA PRN - for environmental/exercise/virus/allergy
Step 1 SABA (short-acting beta agonist) PRN is safe and recommended….
- during pregnancy
- for babies/kids (they should use nebs not inhalers)
Types of SABA
- albuterol (salbutamol, proventil, ventolin)
- lebalbuterol (xopenex)
Step 2
Low dose ICS (inhaled corticosteroids) or alternatives - for worsening resp s/s from asthma and/or nighttime awakening/SOB
Step 3
Medium-dose ICS or SABA + low-dose
cons to step 3
may stunt teen growth
Step 6
oral corticosteroids for acute exacerbations (all-day coughing/wheezing)
example of oral corticosteroid
prednisone
example of Leukotriene receptor antagonist
montelukast (singulair)
example of mast cell stabilizer
cromolyn (intal)
example of long-acting beta agonist
- salmeterol (sarevent)
- formoterol (foradil, perforomist)
- indacaterol (arcapta)
example of ICS + LABA
- fluticasone/salmaterol = Advair
- fluticasone/vilanterol = Breo-Ellipta
- budesonide/formoterl = Symbicort
- mometasone/formoferol - Dulera
