3.8 Amides Flashcards
What are amides?
Amides are the condensation of carboxylic acids and amines
How are poly-amides formed?
Condensation of amino acids
OR
Condensation of di-oic acids and diamines
What process returns an amide to its parent acid and amine?
Hydrolysis - through the addition of water or NaOH in a slow reaction
What conditions will cause amide hydrolysis to occur more quickly?
Acid or basic condition will increase the speed of reaction
Describe hydrolysis of amides in acidic conditions
The carboxylic acid will remain protonated
The base will accept a proton (on the nitrogen) and become a salt
Describe hydrolysis of amides in basic conditions
The carboxylic acid will become de-protonated to form the carboxylate salt.
The amine will remain unreacted
