3.6 Amines Flashcards
Name of functional group of amine
amino
What suffix is used to denote an amine?
- amine
e. g. ethanomine
What type of bond is present in an amine?
A nitrogen-carbon bond
What characteristic differentiate 1˚, 2˚ and 3˚ amines?
1˚ - one carbon-nitrogen bond
2˚ - 2 carbon-nitrogen bonds
3˚ - 3 carbon nitrogen bonds
Why can amine act as proton acceptors/bases?
They have lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen that can become protonated
How can an amine be converted to a more soluble salt?
The amine N can be protonated so it is now able to from ion-dipole interactions with water. previous amine were able to form only H-bonds with water.
Why would an amine be converted to more soluble salt?
drugs containing amine groups are protonated so they are more soluble in blood and thus more easily distributed around the body
