GNI
the total value of goods and services produced within a country in a year, plus all the net income earned by that country and its population from overseas sources
GDP
the total value of everything produced by all the people an companies in a country
(China’s GDP per capita increased 14 times from 1990 to 2015)
both are good to make comparisons as they are usually expressed in $US and sometimes at purchasing power parity
social
hard to quantify freedom of speech, the impact of corruption etc.
