3.7 Urinary/Excretory System Flashcards
 Kidneys
Organs that remove excess water and waste substances from the blood in a process that yields urine.
Ureters
Tube like structures extending from the kidneys to the urinary bladder that move urine between these organs
Urinary bladder
The reservoir for urine
Liver
An organ that filters the blood to remove amino acids and neutralize some harmful toxins
Skin
Skin is an organ that contains sweat glands, through the process of perspiration it produces sweat and eliminates excess water, salt, and other bodily wastes
Function of the urinary system?
Provides pollution control by eliminating body waste and filtering the blood
Average fluid excretion of an adult?
1000cc to 1800cc during a 24 hour period
Average urethra length?
20 cm in males, 4 cm in females
Average capacity of urinary bladder?
300cc to 500cc in adults
Physical description of the kidneys?
Two bean shaped organs containing a vast network of vessels and tubules, called nephron, that act as a filter to remove excess water and waste substances from the blood to produce urine
Function of perspiration?
Reds the body of waste and helps regulate body temperature by cooling it’s outside surface. Excretion of oil by sebaceous glands keeps the skin soft and prevents hair from becoming too dry or brittle.
Nephrectomy
Removal of a kidney
Lithotripsy
Kidney stone shockwave treatment, serves to crushed stones that form in the kidney and become stuck in an ureter. Procedure decreases the size of the stones with a laser/shockwaves or removes them using a long flexible instrument called a stone basket
Cystoscopy
Reviewing the urinary bladder using an endoscope
