3.1 Cells & Tissues & Organs Flashcards
Anatomy
The study of the structure and relationships between body parts
Physiology
The study of the functions of body parts and the body as a whole
Cells
The basic unit of life, smallest structural unit of living organisms capable of performing all the function of life, contain organelles, vary in shape size and function
functions of cells
respiration, nutrition, energy production, waste elimination, and reproduction
cell membrane
outer covering of a cell that regulates transport in and out of the cell, porous and flexible, maintains internal cellular environment
cytoplasm
clear, jelly-like substance that fills cell, surrounds organelles and nucleus, provides structure so cell doesn’t collapse
nucleus
functional center of a cell, governs activity through replication of genetic material stored within
tissue
a group of similar cells that perform a specialized function
epithelial tissue
covers external surface (skin) and lining of body cavities (mouth, ears, nose, throat)
connective tissue
provides support, stores energy, connects other tissues and parts (ex. bone, fate blood, cartilage)
muscular tissue
shorts when it contracts, makes body movement possible
nervous tissue
carries messages between body and brain when stimulated through electrical impulses and chemicals
organs
2 or more tissues grouped together to perform a specific function
Brain
An organ in the central nervous system that is the primary receiver organizer and distributor of information in the body
Heart
The organ that pumps blood throughout the body
