Amendment
the basic rights of citizens to free from unequal treatment based on certain characteristics (race, gender, disability)
Civil Rights
a federal law that prohibits employment based on race, gender, color, religion/national origin.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
a federal law that prohibits discrimination related to the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin or gender.
Civil Rights Act of 1968.
treating a person or group unfairly based on their race, religion, gender, disability, or other reason.
Discrimination
a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution outlawing discrimination based on gender.
Equal Rights Amendment
a written test used to decide whether or not someone was eligible to register to vote.
Literacy Test
a fee someone has to pay in order to vote.
Poll Tax
to forbid or not allow something.
Prohibit
the separation of people, such as segregation based on race.
Segregation
a power or issue for individual states to determine.
States’ rights
the right to vote.
Suffrage
a federal law that banned race discrimination in voting practices by federal, state, and local gov’t.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
a section especially in law, granting exceptions to people who were affected by previous conditions.
