A pamphlet written to convince the American colonist to support becoming independent from England. It was written by colonial journalist Thomas Paine in 1776.
Common Sense
An agreement among individuals.
Compact
People have the right to fair and reasonable laws. Officials have to follow rules when enforcing laws and need to treat all people in the same way.
Due Process
A government document that gave more power to the English Parliament and less power to the King, and expanded the rights of the people. It was written by the members of the English Parliament in 1689.
English Bill of Rights
A government that has been limited in power by a constitution, or written agreement.
Limited Government
The writer of Common Sense.
Thomas Paine
A government document that limited the power of the king of England and protected the rights of the nobility. It was written by the English nobility in 1215.
Magna Carta
An agreement among individuals that created a government that would provide order and protect rights of the colonists. It was written by a group of English Pilgrims as they traveled to Massachusetts in 1620.
Mayflower Compact
A set of things that people believe they should be free to do without restrictions.
Rights
All people must follow the laws and the laws should be enforced fairly.
Rule of Law
People can make decisions on how their government should work.
