3.5 - Marshall Islands Flashcards
Marshall Islands
West Pacific Ocean
Dome with radioactive waste, tomb of nuclear waste
Education on cultural events and more cultural awareness.
Ocean Health
Increased temperature, meaning algae vital for coral reef growth dies out
Algae provides colour and therefore results in bleaching
This acidifaction ultimately affectd ocean health.
Reef
Source of food for fish
Coastal protection
Tourism
Local Changes
SL rise and extreme weather events
Can release radioactive waste
Sewage, plastic waste and poor regulations.
Human Wellbeing
Depletion of fish stsocks (increased food costs/decreased supply).
Fish depletion and ‘flags for convenience shipping’.
Flag Hopping
When the demand for fish increases whilst supplies decreases, fishign gets restricted by regulations. Countries avoid this by flag hopping, when one country uses another’s flag and stocks aren’t correctly recorded.
Why Are Fish Stocks Depleting
Culture and wellbeing of SIDS heavily reliant on fish as a protein source
Overfishing developed by nations, causes them to look for other opportunities.
