2.7 - Biofuels Flashcards
What Are Biofuels
Combustible fuels created from biomass, they’re oils extracted from natural plants and seeds. Advanced biofuels are bio waste that we use to produce oils.
Biofuels - Advantages:
Only alternative to transportation fuels, decreasing fuel impact
Crops used developed a lot quicker than fossil fuels
Bio-refineries produced 930,000 barrels a day and lots of jobs
Recycle waste plant material can be used
Ethanol industry creates 11 jobs for every tonne of oil produced
Increased diversification reduces chance of Dutch disease.
Biofuels - Disadvantages
Competition with other natural resources e.g. land, food & water
Lower supply of edible crops
Increased deforestation and fertiliser can contaminate water
Kess sequestration & therefore ore carbon in atmosphere.
Government have reduced fossil fuel taxes to control inflation
Less space for agricultural land
Biofuels IN Brazil
Dependant on biofuels, created 1.34m direct jobs, 930,000 barrels of oil a day, Flexi fuel cars, high efficiency as opposed to using lots of land
