2.1 - Ukraine Flashcards
Energy Mix
Every country has its own energy mix (the proportion of each energy it uses in a year).
Primary Energy
The source of the energy e.g. fossil rock
Secondary Energy
What it’s converted into e.g. electricity
Global Energy Mix
80% accounted for by fossil fuels
Consumption (Total Use)
Will increase due to industrialisation, urbanisations, power grids and disposable incomes increasing however eventually it’ll decrease as environmental concerns increase.
Energy Mix (Transition)
Initially biomass and waste as it’s cheap and free, and non-renewables are used for industrialisation and eventually fossil fuels and power stations are implemented. Eventually this will shift to nuclear and renewables and radical technology.
Ukraine
Worse score of any European country on International Energy Security Risk Index
It’s at over 175% higher risk but has the 7th largest coal reserve in the world.
Why Is Ukraine So Bad
Carbon-intense consumption
3x higher than average EU energy intensity
Outdated energy infrastructure
Inefficient central heating
Coal reserves under Russian control
Also very dependant on imports
