2.8 - Norway Flashcards
Norway’s Energy Mix
They wanted to avoid dutch disease and therefore didn’t just exploit raw materials
All energy is from HEP and tidal power
Carbon capture storage was used but they also wanted to reduce carbon emissions
How Can Carbon Capture Storage Resolve A Problem
Remove CO2 from the atmosphere and into underground facilities
Does this disrupt the carbon cycle?
0.85m tonnes of CO2 sequestered per year.
Carbon Capture
Capture CO2 from the atmosphere from coal power stations however it is very expensive and makes no use of sequestered carbon. They compress the gas and store it in underground facilities instead.
Thorium
The waste can be used as fuel, it also makes use of old nuclear waste, however waste plutonium is produced and that’s radioactive. It generates energy from turbines and is 4x plentiful than Uranium even though it’s made from uranium pellets.
Impacts Of Taxing On Ecosystem
Taxing in green countries, ‘Norway’, taxes are highest and therefore the externalities of technology are accounted for however the money may be used elsewhere
Impacts Of Taxing On Humans
Unhappy, highly taxed people
Could reduce pollution and promote health
Protests could be done against government due to high taxation
Subsidising - Ecosystem Impact
Promotes excessive use and this can lead to damages to the environment
Urban sprawl encouraged due to low fuel pices
Subsiding - Human Impacts
Promotes excessive use
Likely to increase pollution
Less government funding for other areas
Will Radical Technology Work??
Some renewables are limited by physical geography and pricee due to lack of space
