1.7 - Glocal Carbon Cahnge Flashcards

1
Q

Pre-Industrial Revolution

A

A mixture of fast carbon cycle, and slow carbon cycle. Fairly fast fluxes of carbon removed CO2, balancing the carbon cycle.

Q

Anthropogenic CC

A

Carbon has been transferred from fossil stores into the atmosphere, therefore slow exchange is now very fast.

Q

IPCC Evidence

A

Natural - Milankovitch, sunspot cycles, El Niño, Ocean oscillation BUT there’s more changes in temperatures CO2 than actual CO2. Human activity has moved carbon around the cycle but only half has been removed by the fast cycle.

Q

What Sort Of Carbon Changes Have Happened.

A

310 ppm to 4000ppm showing a 40% increase since 1700s.
Main additions and fossil fuels and deforestation
Most carbon should stay in the atmosphere for 2000 years.

Q

Climate Systems

A

CO2 causes 20% of water vapour, and provides heating to water vapour. AS CO2 increases, temperature increases and more water evaporates, therefore increasing the effects of greenhouse heating.

Q

Marine Eco-Systems

A

Warmer oceans decrease phytoplankton which limits sequestration. More CO2 fertilises phytoplankton and marine temp extends growing season and increase humidity.

Q

Terrestrial Eco-Systems

A

Water stressed plants are more vulnerable to fires which release trapped carbon.

Q

Hydrological Systems

A

Warmer temperatures evaporates more water increasing humidity, which then cools and rains. Increased temp slows the growth of new cells increasing the size of stomata meaning more water is lost and more CO2 is taken in.
