- Lack of REALITY TESTING - losing touch with reality
- Delusions (fixed, incorrect beliefs)
- Lack INSIGHT - unaware of their disorder

- PROTECTIVE factors provide resilience and keep people ABOVE the line (intelligence, support, family)
