Define anxiety
Feeling of FEAR and apprehension that may be related to a situation/object.
Often accompanies by physiological AROUSAL
List some symptoms of AROUSAL in anxiety

Agoraphobia - fear of being ALONE in a situation from which ESCAPE may be difficult or embarrassing
Social phobia - fear of social situations and possible NEG SCRUTINY
Define SPECIFIC phobias
Fear/avoidance DISPROPORTIONATE to the stimulus
Causes CLINICALLY significant distress/impairment
What would generally be the treatment for SPECIFIC phobias?
SYSTEMATIC desensitisation
graded exposure and relaxation

Define PANIC disorder
Recurrent, unexpected PANIC ATTACKS
Persistent WORRY about future attacks (anxiety)
What are panic attacks?
What are the symptoms?
Abrupt surge of FEAR, peaking within MINUTES
- inc heart rate
- sweating
- trembling
- breathing difficulties
- nausea
Treatment for panic attacks?
Psycho-education on misinterpretation of physical symptoms
GRADED exposure to panic-inducing symptoms
Define Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Constant excessive WORRY about things in general, for more days than not for at least 6 months
Name the symptoms of GAD
3 or more of the following:
- restlessness, feeling on edge
- fatigue
- concentration difficulties
- irritability
- sleep disturbance
- muscle tension
Name the 3 TYPES of worry
Type 1 = “I am WORRIED I will fail”
Type 2 = “Something must be WRONG with me for worrying so much”
