Brazilian term for an informal, shanty-type settlement.

Decaying formal housing, mainly in the inner city.

Composite index of development devised by United Nations. Includes life expectancy, educational attainment and GDP per capita.
Self-help housing initiatives
Partnership between communities and local government where local government provides materials and community supplies labour.
Shanty towns
Area of slum housing.
Soft infrastructure
Housing, educations, health, leisure and other associated facilities.
hard infrastructure
Transportation, communication, sewage water, electricity systems, etc
Quality of life
Term that sums up all the factors that affect a person’s general wellbeing.
Deprivation
When an individual’s wellbeing falls below a certain level
Social exclusion
Process where certain groups are pushed to the margins of society and prevented from participating.
In situ urbanisation
Process that occurs when rural settlements transform themselves into urban or quasi-urban.
