Migration
Movement of people across a specified boundary-national or international- to establish at a new permanent place
Internal migration
People moving within one country
International migration
People moving within more than one country.
Immigration
Movement of people into a particular country.
Emigration
Movement of people leaving a country.
In-migration
Movement within a country to a particular destination.
Out-migration
Movement away from a destination
Net migration
Number of migrants entering a region minus number of migrants leaving a region.
Migration stream
Formed by migrants sharing a common origin and destination.
Counterstream
Reverse flow of migrants.
Push factors
Negative conditions at the point of origin, which encourage or force people to move.
Pull factors
Positive conditions at point of destination.
Chain migration
Process that occurs after one or a small number of pioneering migrants have led the way. Others are to follow.
Relay migration
When in a family cycle different people are responsible for migrating to maintain and improve the financial position of the family.
Step migrations
When a rural migrant moves to a bigger town and then proceeds to move to an even bigger city. Happens in steps.
Voluntary migration
When the individual or household has the choice of whether to move or not.
Forced migration
When individual or household doesn’t have a choice but to move.
Migration typologies
Classifications of migration into types, such as distance, duration and causes.
