2.1 Local energy budgets Flashcards
Albedo
Reflectivity of the Earth’s surfaces
Atmosphere
Mixture of gases, mainly hydrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. That surround the earth.
Climate
Average weather conditions of an are over a period of years.
Conduction
Transfer of heat by contact
Convection
Transfer of heat by the movement of a gas or liquid.
Latent hear transfer
Transfer of energy via evaporation and condensation.
Water turned into vapour, heat used up. Water becomes liquid, heat is released.
Sensible heat transfer
Transfer of energy by convection and conduction
Inversion
Situation in which cold air is found closer to the ground and warmer air is found above it. Common in valleys and basins.
Radiation
Emission of electromagnetic waves, like x-ray and short and long-waves.
Long-wave radiation
Radiation from a relatively cold body, such as the earth.
Short-wave radiation
AKA ultra violet radiation, it is radiation from a very hot body, such as the sun. It travels in short wave lengths.
Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a given place or time.
I insolation
Incoming solar radiation
