A local area network is the networking of a group of computers within close proximity to each other, for example within a home or an office

Wide area network WAN
A wide area network is a network that spans large geographical areas, for example across cities, counties or countries.

Metropolitan area network MAN
Is used to connect users with computer resources in a geographical area larger than that covered by a LAN but smaller than a WAN, for example connecting networks in a city to create a single large network that could then be connected to a WAN more efficiently.
