2.2 application software Flashcards
what are the characteristics of word processor?
Easy to correct mistakes
Copies can be made, saving printing costs
Data can be lost or corrupted
Some symbols are not easily accessible
what are the characteristics of spreadsheets?
Easy calculations
Reports can be formatted easily
Deskilling workers as they no longer need any skill
Spreadsheet structure can increase storage
what are the characteristics of a database?
Improved data sharing
Increased end user productivity
Complex, difficult and time-consuming to design
Can require substantial hardware and software costs
what are the characteristics of email?
Delivery is extremely fast
Available 24 hours a day
Recipient requires internet access to receive email
Can require a lot of electronic storage space
what is a compiler?
A program that is compiled is a self-contained unit that is ready to be executed so it runs faster. However, they can take time to compile large programs.
what is a debugger?
Works step by step through the code. Stops at the point where an error has occurred. Enabling investigation and correction of errors. Does not run in real time, so may not expose all problems.
what is a translator?
Execution errors are quicker to identify as it works through the code one line at a time. Slower to execute than a compiled program as it must translate the source code every time it is run.
what is a integrated design environment?
Allows for greater collaboration between a group of programmers working on the same project. Too complex for novice programmers.
what is a management information system?
A single integrated system allows for improved communication between relevant personnel. The quality of the system is dependent on the quality of the data; inaccurate data presents inaccurate information, which can have a negative impact on decision making.
what is multimedia?
Multi-sensorial: uses a number of senses, e.g. hearing, seeing, talking. Requires a system and power to operate that may not be available in some locations.
what is collaboration?
Efficiency enables team members to work together regardless of their location. Can reduce personal contact between team members as all communication is online.
what is project management?
Real time collaboration. Sharing of documents and aids cost management. Can be costly and may overly complicate simple projects.
what is CAD?
Enables design changes to be made rapidly, enables the designer to check that the design is within the specification and enables clients to view designs at an early stage in the process. Software complexity, training costs can be high, software consumes large amounts of computer processing power.
what is CAM?
Enables designers to construct physical prototypes during design process, enables clients to check the progress of functional and semi-functional prototypes at an earlier stage. Software complexity, training costs can be high, requires advanced manufacturing devices, which are expensive.
what is publishing?
Text can be formatted using a wide range of fonts, effects and colours, background colours can be changed for blocks of text and images, text can be wrapped around images. Software can be complex, requiring training, training takes time and costs money.
