3.4 - 4.1 - cycles of matter & climate Flashcards
What happens to matter within the ecosystem?
Unlike the one way flow of energy, matter is recycled within and between ecosystems.
What is the biogeochemical cycle?
Elements pass from one organism to another and among parts of the biosphere through closed loops.
What happens to matter as it is cycles through the ecosystem?
Matter is never created nor destroyed => it is just altered/recycled/reused
Process involved in the biogeochemical cycles: In the Biological aspect, what’s happening?
All activities are performed by living organisms.
Process involved in the biogeochemical cycles: What’s happening in the Geological aspect?
There are major movements of matter within and below the surface of the Earth.
Process involved in the biogeochemical cycles: What does the Chemical & Physical aspect include?
Formation of clouds and precipitation, flow of running water, and lightening.
Process involved in the biogeochemical cycles: What is the human aspect?
It is activities that affect cycles of matter at a global level.
What is the Water Cycle?
The movement of water throughout the biosphere.
What does every organism depend upon?
Nutrients
What are the 3 key nutrients?
Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus.
Biosphere: (CO2 Deposited): What are the fossil fuels?
Coal, oil, and natural gas.
Biosphere: (CO2 Deposited): Emissions and what else?
Animal respiration.
Biosphere: (CO2 Deposited): What kind of carbon?
Organic carbon.
Biosphere: (CO2 Withdrawn): What is going through photosynthesis?
Plants and some bacteria.
Biosphere: (CO2 Withdrawn): What does CO2 do? Where does it go?
CO2 dissolves in oceans and returns to the atmosphere.
What is Climate?
The average conditions of an area over a long period of time.
What is the 1st factor that impacts climate?
Solar energy trapped in the biosphere.
What is the 2nd factor that impacts climate?
Latitude - receives direct energy.
What is the 3rd factor that impacts climate?
Transport of heat by the wind and ocean currents.
How is the Earth’s average temperature calculated?
The balance between heat that stays in the biosphere and heat that is lost to space determines Earth’s average temperature.
The balance is controlled by the concentration of 3 gases in the atmosphere. What are these 3 gases?
CO2, Methane, and Water Vapor.
What are the 3 gases (CO2, Methane, and Water Vapor) called collectively?
Greenhouse Effect
What is the process of the Greenhouse Effect?
The gases function like glass in a greenhouse, allowing visible light to enter but trapping heat. If greenhouse concentrations rise, they trap more heat. So the Earth warms. If their concentrations fall, more heat escapes. So the Earth cools.
What is the climate also affected by?
The proximity towards the equator.
