Apgar Scoring System: Grimace or Irritability
2 newborn cries and tries to move foot away from finger snapped against sole of foot
1 newborn gives weak cry in stimulus response
0 newborn does not cry or react
Apgar Scoring System: Activity or Muscle Tone
2 newborn resists attempts to straighten hips and knees
1 newborn makes weak attempts to resist straightening
0 newborn is completely limp w/o muscle tone
Apgar Scoring System: Respiration
2 rapid
1 slow
0 absent
abruptio placenta
premature separation of the placenta from the wall of the uterus
birth canal
the vagina and cervix
breech presentation
delivery in which the buttocks come out first
eclampsia
severe HTN in pregnant woman, resulting in convulsions
ectopic pregnancy
pregnancy developing outside the uterus, typically fallopian tube
fetal alcohol syndrome
caused by consumption of alcohol by a pregnant woman leading to growth and physical problems, mental retardation, and congenital abnormalities
fundus
dome shaped top of the uterus
gestational diabetes
diabetes developing during pregnancy in women who did not have diabetes before pregnancy
lightening
movement of fetus down into the pelvis late in pregnancy
meconium
fetal stool
if dark green material in amniotic fluid, sign of distress or disease in newborn. It can be aspirated into fetus’s lungs during delivery
