advanced EMT (AEMT)
person with training in advanced life support e.g. IV’s and administration of some medications

protects people with disabilities against discrimination
automated external defibrillator (AED)
device that detects treatable life threatening cardiac dysrhythmias, which is ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, and delivers shock
continuous quality improvement (CQI)
system of internal and external reviews and audits of all aspects of EMS systems, usually how a company evaluates itself and finds way of improving itself and quality for patients
emergency medical dispatch (EMD)
system that assists dispatchers in selecting appropriate units to respond depending on the call, but also provide callers instructions on what to do prior EMS arriving
emergency medical technician (EMT)
person trained in basic life support e.g. AED, airway adjuncts, and ASSISTING patients with certain medications
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
passed in 1996 to limit availability of patients’ health care information and penalizing violations of patient privacy
medical control
physician instructions given directly by radio or cell phone (ONLINE/DIRECT)
instructions given indirectly by protocol and guidelines (OFFLINE/INDIRECT)

physician who authorizes the EMT to provide medical care on the field
mobile integrated healthcare (MIH)
method of delivering health care to the community rather than at a hospital or doctor’s office

document created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that outlines skills performed by all the different EMS providers
paramedic
person with extensive training in advanced life support e.g. endotracheal intubation, emergency drugs, and cardiac monitoring
primary service area (PSA)
designated area in which EMS agency is responsible for
public safety access point
call center responsible for managing requests for police, fire, and ambulance
primary vs secondary prevention
primary are efforts to prevent an injury or illness from EVER occurring
secondary efforts limit the effects of an injury or illness that you CANNOT completely control
