Normal BS range

BS range for hypoglycemia
40-80
BS range for hypoglycemic crisis
40 or lower
DKA
diabetic ketoacidosis, a form of hyperglycemia in uncontrolled diabetes in which acids accumulate when insulin is not available
hemophilia
congenital abnormality in which the body is unable to produce clots, resulting in uncontrolled bleeding
hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNS)
s/p high blood sugar in older adults causing ALOC, dehydration, and organ damage
Kussmaul respirations
deep, rapid breathing usually resulting from accumulation of certain acids when insulin is not available in the body
poludipsia
excessive thirst
polyphagia
excessive eating
symptomatic hypoglycemia
severe hypoglycemia resulting in changes in mental status
thrombophilia
tendency toward the development of blood clots as a result of an abnormality of the system of coagulation
type 1 diabetes
autoimmune, antibodies attack pancreatic beta cells, thus cannot produce insulin
type 2 diabetes
insulin resistance develops in response to increased blood glucose levels, managed with exercise, diet, and medications
