16 Cardiovascular Emergencies Flashcards
OQRST of AMI
onset: gradual
quality: tightness or pressure
region/radiation: substernal and non radiating
severity: progressively worsening
timing: waxing and waning
OQRST of dissecting aneurysm
onset: abrupt
quality: sharp or tearing
region/radiation: radiating to back
severity: 10/10 on onset
timing: constant since onset
acute coronary syndrome
group of symptoms caused by myocardial ischemia including angina and MI
acute myocardial syndrome
heart attack s/p death of heart muscle following obstruction of blood flow to it
acute i.e. new or happening now
angina pectoris
transient chest discomfort caused by partial or temporary blockage of blood flow to heart muscle
aortic aneurysm
weakening in the wall of the aorta that makes it susceptible to rupture
asystole
complete absence of all heart electrical activity
automaticity
ability of cardiac muscle cells to contract without stimulation from nervous system
cardiac arrest
when heart fails to generate effective and detectable blood flow; pulses are not detectable
cardiac output
measure of volume of blood circulated by the heart in 1 minute
cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate
coronary arteries
blood vessels carrying blood and nutrients to heart muscle
dissecting aneurysm
inner layers of an artery become separated, allowing blood at high pressures to flow between the layers
dysrhythmia
irregular or abnormal heart rhythm
infarction
death of body tissue s/p interruption of blood supply
occlusion
a blockage
