3.1.7 Water Flashcards
1
Q
how is water cohesive
A
they have hydrogen bonds between them so they stick together
2
Q
how is water adhesive
A
they create hydrogen bonds between a water molecule and another molecule
3
Q
why are water used for metabolic reactions
A
- used for hydrolysis reaction and is released on a condensation reaction
- used for photosynthesis- photolysis
- good metabolite
4
Q
why is water a good solvent
A
- good transport medium, able to dissolve many solutes as it has opposite charges-> polarity
- non-polar molecules are insoluble
5
Q
why does water have a high specific heat capacity
A
- provides a thermally habitat, resists temp change as it takes a lot of energy to change it
6
Q
why does water have a high latent heat of vaporization
A
- takes a lot of energy to break hydrogen bonds to change state
- sweating, uses sweat to evaporate (cooling effect)
- transpiration
7
Q
why does water have density
A
- ice is less dense than liquid water, it floats, which provides habitat
- transparent to provide habitat for fish
8
Q
why does water have surface tension
A
- H bonds form, providing habitats for pond skaters, mosquitoes laying eggs
