3.1.1 Gene Transfer Mechanisms Flashcards
What is Transduction?
Describe the characteritics of Generalized Transduction.
From First Aid: A packaging event. Lysogenic phage infects bacterium, leading to cleavage of bacterial DNA. Parts of bacterial chromosomal DNA may become packaged in phage capsid. Phage infects another bacterium, transferring the gene.
Draw a diagram of bacteriophage generalized transduction.
Describe the characteristics of Specialized Transduction.
From First Aid: An excision event. Lysogenic phage infects bacterium; viral DNA incorporates into bacterial chromosome. When phage DNA is excised, flanking bacterial genes may be excised with it. DNA is packaged into phage capsid and can infect another bacterium.
Draw a diagram of specialized transduction.
Describe the characteristics of Phage Conversion.
What are the characteristics of F+ Conjugation and what are the important structural components of the F-plasmid?
From First Aid: F+ plasmid contains genes required for sex pilus and conjugation. Bacteria without this plasmid are termed F-. Sex pilus on F+ bacterium contact F- bacterium. A single strand of plasmid DNA is transferred across the conjugal bridge. No transfer of chromosomal DNA.
Draw a diagram of F+ conjugation.
Describe the characteristics of Hfr conjugation.
From First Aid: F+ plasmid can become incorporated into bacterial chromosomal DNA, termed high-frequency recombination cell. Replication of incorporated plasmid DNA may include some flanking chromosomal DNA. Transfer of plasmid and chromosomal genes.
Gimme some more info about Hfr conjugation.
What are integrative conjugative elements?
Describe the characteristics of Resistance Plasmid Conjugation.
Draw a diagram of Resistance plasmid conjugation.
Describe the 3 ways horizontally transferred DNA can persist in the recipient.
