3.1 Study guide Flashcards
Realized niche vs. Fundamental
Realized is the actual areas the animal can be, while Fundamental is the possibility of areas.
Niche
Biotic and Abiotic resources a species uses.
Mutualism
When two species help and give each other something (+,+)
Commensalism
When one species gets to be somewhere while the other species is not affected (+, 0)
Parasitism
When one species gets resources from the other species and is hurting the other species (-,+)
Predation
One species gets hunted down while the other tries to run (+,-)
Herbivory
One species eats the plant while the plant just stays there (+,-)
Facultative vs. obligatory
Facultative is when a species receives something from another species, but the don’t depend on them for everything.
Obligatory is when the two species depend on each other to survive.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little?
The two species meet each other, but they don’t compete with each other. They leave each other alone.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a lot?
The two compete for resources, eventually driving one or the other out, officially separating.
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community? What are some ways that species can partition their niches?
It can increase the biodiversity by bringing new species of animals to the community. Some ways they can partition is if they eat the same foods, they eat them at different times of the years.
Compare and contrast different interspecies interactions, give examples of each type
Competition is the opposite of mutualism. Competition is when two animals fight for one resource while mutualism helps each other get a resource. Competition: Impala and Zebra. Mutualism: Lichen.
