3) PADI System Overview Flashcards
What is an instructional system?
A designed set of experiences intended to make learning and instruction more effective
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an instructional system?
Advantages: 1) no need to create primary content 2) well designed ones have predefined learning outcomes and performance requirements 3) less potential for gaps 4) systems give you greater flexibility 5) risk management (properly training students so they understand risks and know what supposed to do; if incident occurs proper use of proven system helps establish and document that the instructional process was appropriate and carried out correctly)
Disadvantages: 1) A poorly designed one may lack all or some of the advantages 2) Even in a well designed one it may not work if the instructor fails to apply it as intended
5 characteristics distinguish that PADI system from other instructional systems in diving
1) Based on established principles from mainstream education and training 2) performance based (measurable skills and objectives) 3) student-centered and globally consistent 4) current 5) proven
PADI students progress by demonstrating specific, _______ learning and skill ______
Measurable Objectives.
2 broad types of PADI programs?
Which one results in a certification?
Courses (result in certification upon completion) vs. Experiences (Discover …)
Broad term for anyone in any PADI program?
Diver level courses participants called _____
Leadership level courses participants called _______
Participant
Student divers or students
Candidates
What 5 types of info on conducting programs do media in the PADI system provide?
1) Course standards (requirements ie minimum age, max depth, ratios)
2) Objectives and Performance Requirements (describe what students must be able to do during and by the end of the program)
3) Content (material learned during the program)
4) Assessment (allow participants to demo what they’ve learned as objectively and measurably as possible)
5) Support (ie technique suggestion, forms for completion, background info, publications that update PADI standards and programs)
Types of media in the PADI system, and what info do they typically provide?
Instructor Guides - course standards, objectives, content, assessment, and support info (basic sequence options for courses and related standards)
PADI eLearning, Manuals, and Videos - most intended for both students in courses and participants in programs that don’t result in certification
PADI Guide to Teaching - reference providing suggested skill development and instruction techniques
Knowledge reviews, quizzes, exams, and quick reviews - allow knowledge assessment
Lesson Guides - use digital versions to present content to students
Forms and Applications
Positive Identification Card
Student Record Files
Media for a particular PADI program may be required or optional, but the _________ _________ _________ is always required.
Program instructor guide
Student media for PADI core courses are generally required if available in a language student understands? T/F
What if it is in a language only the instructor guide exists?
Are medical forms, statements of understanding and releases always required? T/F
True
You provide content through predive briefings and/or formal class presentations
True
As the media proved most of the content for fully supported courses your roles are:
1) Assess, guide, and reinforce knowledge development
2) Adapt the course to individual student needs and local dive environment
3) Provide instructive pre dive briefings and in water skill demos
4) Develop and assess learning as students apply what they’re learning
What do you do for a course that only has an instructor guide
You also deliver the course content through pre-dive briefings or formal class presentations
The requirements within which you teach a course are the ______ ______
Course standards
Every PADI program has a required _____ _______
Instructor Guide
In the PADI system a _____ is a training requirement that you must follow (they are in bold in the instructor guides and training bulletin; recommendations and suggestions not in bold)
Standard
