3. Newton's laws Flashcards
What are the contact forces?
Push or pull.
What does push or pull require?
Touch.
Which type of force does not require touch?
Field force.
What is an example of a field force?
Gravity or electric fields.
What is Newton’s first law?
An object will stay at rest until acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object will stay in motion until acted upon by an unbalanced force.
What is Newton’s first law also known as?
The law of inertia.
What gives an object more inertia?
More mass - this makes it harder to change its motion.
What type of diagrams show the forces acting on an object?
Free Body Diagrams.
What is Newton’s second law?
The net force that acts on an object is directly proportional to the object’s mass and acceleration.
What is the formula for Newton’s second law?
F=MA
What can a net force do to an object?
Increase or decrease an object’s speed, or change its direction.
What does Newton’s third law state?
For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
What is normal force?
Normal force is the contact force that surfaces exert to prevent solid objects from passing through each other.
How do normal forces usually act?
Perpendicular to the surface.
What is friction?
A force that resists motion of objects past each other.
What is the force of friction directly proportional to?
The coefficient of friction and the normal force.
