1. Motion in one dimension Flashcards
What is distance?
The scalar measurement of the total length of the path on which an object moves.
What is displacement?
The vector measurement of the straight line between the starting point and ending point.
What do vectors measure?
Magnitude and direction.
What is speed?
The scalar measurement of how fast an object is moving.
What is velocity?
The vector rate of change of position. It is directly proportional to displacement.
What graph show the position of an object over time?
Position versus time graph.
On a position versus time graph, what does the slope represent?
Average velocity.
What does acceleration measure?
Velocity over time.
How do we know if an object is accelerating faster or slower?
If it is faster, it will be positive, if slower, negative.
What does it mean for an object to be in free fall?
Gravity is the only force acting upon it.
If a feather and a bowling ball are in free fall, which hits the ground first?
They hit at the same time.
Free fall has no what?
Air resistance.
What does the slope of a graph show in a velocity versus time graph?
Average acceleration.
In a velocity versus time graph, what does the area under the curve represent?
Displacement.
In an acceleration versus time graph, what does the area under the curve represent?
Change in velocity.
