16. Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is an electromagnet?
A magnet created when current flows through wire wrapped around a bar of iron, or other ferromagnetic material.
The current that flows through what makes a north and south pole in an electromagent?
Solenoid.
Electromagnets are only magnets when?
When the current is turned on.
What is a solenoid?
A long, straight coil of wire used to generate nearly uniform magnetic field.
What works together to produce a force?
Current and magnetism.
Two wires that carry current placed next to each other create what?
Magnetic fields.
What is exerted on a charged particle that moves through an electric field?
Lorentz force.
What is electromagnetic induction?
A process where a conductor placed in a changing magnetic field causes the production of voltage across the conductor.
What does emf stand for?
Electromagnetic force.
What is electromagnetic force?
The potential difference in between 2 points in a circuit.
What does a generator do?
Converts mechanical energy into electrical energy to use in an outside circuit.
How do generators work?
A wire is wrapped around an iron core and turned inside of a magnetic field to produce an electric current.
What does Lenz’s law state?
The direction of an induced current will always oppose the change in the circuit or the magnetic field that produces it.
What are used to increase or decrease the alternating current?
Transformers.
How much the transformer increases or decreases the voltage is equal to the ratio of what?
Coils coming in and going out.
