Defined as a broad range of feelings that people experience: moods or emotions.

- caused by specific events
- very brief.
- specific and numerous in nature,
- accompanied by facial expressions.
- action-oriented.
The effect of strong emotions can override your rational thinking.
definition moods:
- cause is often general and unclear.
- last longer than emotions.
- less intense than emotions.
- more general (two dimensions: positive and negative affect; that are compose of multiple specific emotions).
- generally not indicated by distinct expressions.
- cognitive in nature.
1st view: Basic emotions:
Recognised universally, although there are disparities among cultures.

CIRCUMFLEX/BASIC MODEL
Positive v negative emotions and moods (VALENCE); Pleasantness
High vs low energy level (arousal/activation).

the set point that we go back to whenever time passes after a positive or negative event (does not apply for traumatic events or drug abuse).
