Guideline: Procedure for back flushing fire pumps: [part 1]
- Close all valves.
- Connect a 2 ½ inch hose from a hydrant to the highest discharge valve that is not CAFS capable.
- Remove keystone from intake and remove filter screen. Remove carefully to avoid breaking.
- Open discharge valve that is connected to the hydrant.

- Flush pump until water is clear.
- Open all discharges one at a time and the other intakes.
- Replace all screens and keystones.
- Perform a daily operational check on the pump to ensure air is removed and governor works properly.
When to perform a pump test:
- Annually
- Following major mechanical repairs:
- to pump/piping, engine or transmission
What are considered low priority maintenance issues?
How should low priority maintenance issues be documented?
- Those that are not mission critical [they do not affect the safe operation of the apparatus while in motion or operating at an emergency scene]
- Through apparatus preventative maintenance order form
What are considered high priority maintenance issues?
And what must be done?
- Those that are mission critical [They affect the safe operation of the apparatus: (examples: steering components, braking systems, pump failures).
- arrangements made for a resolution or a change over to a reserve apparatus
How should high priority maintenance issues be documented?
High priority maintenance issues must be communicated to who?
- These problems will be reported using the Zonar system.
- When using the Zonar system to report a high priority problem, use the “OUT OF SERVICE” option.
- the company officer, battalion chief, and mechanic
For instances when problems are found during the apparatus daily check that are serious enough to justify immediate action but not necessarily require the apparatus to be placed out of service what should be done?
- Reported using Zonar and provide the option “needs attention”
- It will be at the discretion of the engineer, and the company officer to decide what course of action to take [bearing in mind the day of the week, time of day, and status of reserve apparatus.]
What if the engineer finds a high priority maintenance issue that is mission critical, but the captain does not want to address the problem?
- The engineer is responsible for the safe operation of the apparatus
- He has the responsibility to take the apparatus out of service and have the problem addressed
