What is the immediate cause of the hyperviscosity of the blood that may occur in the infant of a diabetic mother?
polycythemia
What cause polycythemia in an infant of a diabetic mother?
fetal hypoxia d/t increased basal metabolic rate d/t hyperglycemia
What is the reason for hypocalcemia in infants of diabetic mothers?
parathyroid hormone suppression (by insulin)
In pts w/ androgen insensitivity syndrome, what causes breast development?
conversion of testosterone to estrogen
When should a gonadectomy be performed in pts with androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS)?
after puberty
What therapy should be instituted in pts w/ AIS after gonadectomy?
estrogen replacement
Why doesn’t progesterone need to be given to pts w/ AIS post-gonadectomy?
no uterus!
In what condition is a person phenotypically female w/ an XY karyotype and the gonads must be removed immediately?
XY gonadal dysgenesis (Swyer syndrome)
What are the gonads like in Swyer syndrome?
streak gonads
Describe the genitalia of a person w/ XY gonadal dysgenesis?
completely normal female genitalia except that there are no ovaries (or testicles), only undifferentiated “streak” gonads
What is the basic pathogenetic cause of Swyer syndrome?
failure of the gonads to differentiate
