Shed blood in circumcision is important because
Blood was a life source and willing to give up that indicates you are in a relationship with someone important
How circumcision was a visible sign that you were in a covenant
Because nudity wasn’t a big deal during Abraham’s time, the result of the circumcision can be seen. This can be compared to the wedding ring because the wedding ring shows you are in a relationship with another person, circumcision shows you are in a relationship with God
Circumcision was a sign of unity
Because it showed identity. If some was circumcised, he was an Israelite
Link between permanence, circumcision, and God’s covenant
Circumcision was permanent, God’s covenants are permanent
How the penis was viewed. What are you showing by cutting off it to God?
The penis was viewed as the source of life, and by sacrificing some of it to God shows a deep relatiosnh
Circumcision shows humility because
You looked different. Offering this piece of life was a humble thing to do, because you are concerned with your relationship with your Father
It was changed with Jesus because he
Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross triumphs over any human sacrifice
David is a great
Leader, warrior, and uniter
In worship David is a
In worship…
- modeled the importance of worship very publicly
- brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem
- makes worship of God the center of national life - introduces songs/Psalms to worship
Some theologians speak about God’s covenants making us
family, with each one calling us into increasingly deeper intimacy with Him
In this understanding, the Ten Commandments (part of the Mosaic Covenant) are like
God giving us the “rules” that guide our family life
In the “family” view of covenants, Moses sprinkling blood on the Israelites and the altar (God’s territory)
showed that Israel is part of God’s family, that they share the same blood
David realizes he has a beautiful house while
God “dwells” in a tent
God’s Response: “You will build me a house???
I will build you a house
Solomon will build a literal temple
For God based on David’s ideas
but God will make a temple/dwelling place for himself through
David’s line
