Sensory deprivation
Human brain needs to remain active or it will lose its ability to perform
Person will become irritable, lack of concentration, perform simple memory tasks, see in color

Types of meditation
Zen- focus on breathing and body functioning
Sufism- dancing and prayer to reach ASC
Transcendental- repeat a mantra
Hypnosis
Patient must want to be hypnotized
Combo of relaxation, focus, and placebo effect
Drug altered consciousness
Most addictive drugs- drugs that increase dopamine level
Alcohol has longest history
Psychoactive drugs alter moods and perceptions
Frequent use can lead to substance dependence (addiction)
Tolerance
Higher doses of drug are needed to produce its original effect
Withdrawal
Physical or psychological effect following discontinued use of a substance
