2e - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the word and balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H20 —> C6H12O8 + 602
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction in the chloroplasts which uses light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen.
How is glucose stored in the leaf ?
As starch
What is the waxy cuticle?
Transparent, waxy, waterproof layer to help reduce water loss by evaporation.
What is the palisade layer?
A tissue located at the top of the leaf which is the main site for photosynthesis made of long, narrow cells packed with chloroplasts.
What is the Spongey mesophyll?
Main gas exchange surface of the leaf which absorbs CO2 and releases o2 and water vapour. Contains intercellular spaces to allow diffusion of gases
What is the upper epidermis ?
Relatively transparent layer which allows light to pass though to the palisade layer below.
What is the lower epidermis ?
Layer which has many stomata to allow CO2 to diffuse in and o2 and water Vapour out.
What are the factors which affect the rate of photosynthesis ?
Light intensity
carbon dioxide concentration
temperature
What does it mean if the rate of photosynthesis on the graph starts to level off?
Some other factor is limiting the photosynthesis
What is the role of the xylem?
- carries water and mineral salts
What does a xylem have instead of a cytoplasm?
A lumen through which water passes
What is the role of the phloem?
- transports sugars e.g. Sucrose and amino acids
What is the movement of substances around the plant known as?
Translocation
