2d - diffusion + osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water from a high concentrated area to a low concentrated area through a partially permeable membrane
What are the factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
- surface area to volume ratio
- concentration gradient
- temperature
- distance
Does diffusion occur fastest over a large surface area or a small surface area?
Large surface area
How does the concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion?
The larger the concentration gradient the quicker diffusion occurs
What is the compensation rate?
The point at which the rate of photosynthesis equals the rate of respiration
What is an example of a partially permeable membrane?
A cell membrane
Why is there a steady net flow during osmosis?
Because there are more molecules on one side than the other, so the solution becomes more dilute.
