2C neurotransmitters and neuromodulators Flashcards
presynaptic neruon
neuron that release neurochemicals into the neural synapse
neural synapse
region that involves the axon terminals of the presynaptic neuron and the synaptic gap and the dendrites of the post synaptic neuron
postsynaptic neuron
neuron that receives the neurochemical from the neural synapse
glutamate
important role in learning and memory- excitatory effects- increases the likelihood of posynaptic neuron’s firing an action potential.
GABA
a role in preventing the over excitation of neurons which reduce anxiety levels- inhibitory affect which decrease the likelihood of postsynaptic neuron firing and action potential
neuromodulator
a chemical molecule that has an effect on multiple postsynaptic neurons
dopamine
a role in reward based learning, motivation, coordinating motor movement
serotonin
role in regulation of mood and sleep
