29: Demography Flashcards
What is the growth of the human population?
exponential growth from the last thousand years
- 8 billion people in the world
What is the growth of more developed countries?
steady in population numbers, stagnant
What is the growth of less developed countries?
populations increasing
- specifically, countries in sub-Saharan Africa
What are more developed countries?
higher per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
What are less developed countries?
lower per capita Gross Domestic Product
What is GDP?
all the goods and services that a country produced in one year / number of habitants
- if I divide all the wealth of the country by the number of habitants, how much each individual would get
What is demography?
study of statistics (births, deaths, income, incidence of disease) which illustrate the changing structure of human populations
What is natality?
production of new individuals by birth
What is birth rate?
number of live births per 1000 people in a population per year
What is mortality?
deaths of individuals
What is death rate?
number of deaths per 1000 people in a population per year
What are life tables?
Follow a cohort and determine the mortality rate, survivorship rate, and can help calculate life expectancy
What is life expectancy?
probable number of years of survival for an individual of a given age
- if a person is born today, what’s the most likely number of years that person would live?
- often calculated “at birth”
What can life expectancy estimate?
the overall life quality of a country
- tells a lot about how food life in the country is
What is life expectancy at birth in the US?
there is lower life expectancy in south/southeast US
- also, low life expectancy in areas with Native American reservations
