11: The Tundra and Interspecific Interactions Flashcards
What is predation?
a member of one species kills and feeds on a member of another species
What is an example of predation?
wolf (predator)/caribou (prey)
What is herbivory?
consumption of plant material by animals
What is an example of herbivory?
caribou (herbivore)/moss (plant)
What is parasitism?
close relation between two organisms in which one benefits at the expense of the other but doesn’t necessarily kill it
What is an example of parasitism?
tapeworms are parasites of wolves and caribou
What is commensalism?
close relation between two organisms in which one benefits, and the other is neither helped nor harmed (neutral)
What is an example of commensalism?
arctic fox eats leftovers of the polar bear
What is mutualism?
close relation between two organisms in which they both benefit
What are examples of mutualism?
- clownfish/anemone
- lichen is not a single organism; it is the association of 2 organisms: fungus (provides habitat) and an algae (provides food)
What is symbiosis?
relationship between two species that live in intimate contact
What are types of symbiosis?
parasitism, commensalism, mutualism
What is competition?
relation between 2 organisms that struggle for the same resource
What is a resource?
something an organisms needs in order to survive or reproduce (space, food, oxygen, water)
- when a resource is used by one organism, it becomes unavailable to others
What is interspecific competition?
between individuals of different species
