What is the definition of a “manager”?
A manager can be defined as somebody who takes control and is administering, directing and ensuring that things are happening and operating as they should be.
What is the definition of a “leader”?
A leader can be defined as somebody who creates a vision that inspires people to follow that vision and move forwards towards achieving it.
What are the 5 styles of leadership?
Democratic Autocratic Laissez-faire Situational Paternalistic
What does the “democratic” leadership style include?
Makes the final decisions but asks for inputs from the employees
What does the “autocratic” leadership style include?
Like to maintain and exert all power, because having complete control allows for high efficiency and better results
–> Rarely asks for inputs
What does the “laissez-faire” leadership style include?
Likes to allow people to call the shots, lets people do their job when and how they want
–> Little pressure from leader
What does the “situational” leadership style include?
The ‘we’re all in this together’ approach to reaching an objective. Usually a democratic leader but may switch to an autocratic leader
–> Switches between democratic and autocratic
What does the “paternalistic” leadership style include?
Very caring about the needs of employees, treat them like family
- -> Very rare in the US
- -> Mostly common in Asia

Refers to the way in which managers and leaders provide direction for others.

The art of getting things done through others by setting clear objectives and organising organizational resources.
