Interpersonal Roles:
- Figurehead
- Leader

Informational Roles:
- Recipient (receives info)
- Disseminator (tells others about info)

Decision Roles:
- Negotiator
- Resource Allocator
- Disturbance Handler
- The Entrepreneurial
Autocratic
- Take decisions on their own and won’t ask for opinion
- Tell EEs what to do
- Centralized decision making
Impact
* Quick decisions, control
* Low morale, Dependent EE with low initiative
Democratic
- Discusses and involves EEs in decision-making
- Two-way communication is encouraged
- Better decisions may be made
Impacts:
* Higher morale, empowered, committed to the decision
* But slow decision making, leaders need certain skills
Paternalistic
- Father figure – keeping EEs happy and motivated. Pay attention to social aspects of EE
- Feedback is invited and decisions are made to benefit staff
- But the leader still makes the decisions
Impact
* Higher morale, loyalty, motivation
* Still no participation in decision making
Laissez-faire
- ‘Let them do it’ or ‘hands off’
- Decision-making is done mostly by EEs
- Little input from management
Impact
* Good when teams need freedom and feel trusted
* But less control, especially if staff are lazy
Situational
- Adapt style to the situation or task
- If workers are skilled and are responsible?
- If workers lack experience?
Impact:
* Flexibility, suitability to each EE
* Confusing, inconsistent
