2.3 Human Population Growth Flashcards
What are some concerns with human population growth?
extraction of resources such as water and fossil fuels, deforestation, fishing, hunting, transmitting diseases
What should be three groups of an age structure?
0-14, 15-44, and 45+
Describe birth rate, death rate, and population growth in Stage 1.
birth rate: high
death rate: high
growth: stable/slow
Describe birth rate, death rate, and population growth in Stage 2.
birth rate: high
death rate: falling rapidly
growth: rapid increase
Describe birth rate, death rate, and population growth in Stage 3.
birth rate: falling
death rate: falls slowly
growth: increase slows
Describe birth rate, death rate, and population growth in Stage 4.
birth rate: low
death rate: low
growth: falling and then stabilizes
Describe birth rate, death rate, and population growth in Stage 5.
birth rate: not sure. falling?
death rate: low
growth: close to 0
How can age structures be used to predict population growth?
When looking at an age structure diagram, first look at the population percentage between 0-14. Are there a lot of young people? Next, look at the age range between 15-44, when females start reproducing. If the age structure looks like a pyramid, then the population growth is high. If it looks more even, then population growth might be more steady or negative.
How does the population growth of a country reflect the development stage it is in?
A country with a higher population growth rate might be less developed. The opposite applies to a developed country, the population growth rate will be close to 0 or even negative.
True or False?
Developed countries tend to use more resources (water withdrawals, carbon emissions, etc.) than developing countries.
Ture. To support the lifestyle of people living in developed countries, the country will have to extract more natural resources.
