2.3 Green Chemistry Flashcards
Fossil Fuels
Substances that burn to release large amounts of heat energy (highly exothermic). They are formed from dead marine animals which have been changed due to heat and pressure under rocks.
Fossil Fuels +/-
+ Abundant
+ Available globally
+ highly exothermic
+ easy to extract
-mining hazards
- combustion releases:
CO2 (greenhouse gas contributes to gw)
CO (incomplete combustion, toxic)
C (soot,incomplete - lung problems)
SO2 (formed from impurities, dissolve in the clouds and lowers pH causing acid rain,
Acid Rain:
-harms aqualife in lakes
- damages leaves
-damages buildings made from of carbonated rocks
Charcoal and Methane Burning
KJ = KJ mol/ Mr
Charcoal - Carbon Neutral, produced from living trees, Trees release same amount of CO2 during than combustion than they take in for growth, Renewable
Methane - produces more energy, produces CO2, non-renewable, made from dead sea creatures trapped under rocks with heat/pressure
